The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) has created a free Open Source software tool for sending DICOM images, which can be easily set up to send DICOM images to the RadPix Teaching File System.

As written in its DICOM conformance statement,the Orthanc software can receive, store and send any kind of DICOMimages (i.e. all the standard transfer syntaxes aresupported). Furthermore, Orthanc can convert most uncompressedimages to PNG images. The PNG format waschosen by Orthanc as it is lossless, is natively supported by manybrowsers, software or programming frameworks, and is able to encode upto 16bpp integer pixels. This on-the-fly conversion to PNG images iswhat happens when previewing a DICOM image within OrthancExplorer:
Note 2: As written above, the Orthancengine is quite generic and is compatible with many image compressionalgorithms (aka. transfer syntax). In particular, during thenegotiation of a presentation context, Orthanc reports by default that it iscompatible with the JPEG 2000 encoding. This leads some PACS enginesto compress their images before sending them to Orthanc, so as toreduce the network bandwidth. Unfortunately, because many medicalimage analysis software are not compatible with such an imagecompression, the JPEG 2000 image that is received by Orthanc might notbe usable by such software. Depending on your application, you might therefore want to leveragethe HTTP protocol in the context of DICOM. Such Web-basedprotocols are probably more familiar to physicians/physicists/softwareengineers, are easier to work with, can be transparently encrypted(HTTPS), and are compatible with multiple-hospital scenarios. Tothis end, you have two possibilities:
DICOM images cannot be shared as you would other files. Sharing a batch of snapshots in the JPEG format or Word documents is a fairly simple process. You can either send them as an email attachment or copy them to a pen drive or an external hard disk and hand that over to the desired recipient. Nowadays, there are several other apps through which you can compress and share files. Sharing documents and standard images is usually a straight forward process because most devices, such as laptops, desktops, mobile phones, and tablets, have built-in software to view and edit these files. DICOM images, however, cannot be viewed by standard image viewers. You need special software that can recognize and process these high quality images for you to view. Moreover, DICOM image files occupy a lot of space due to their high resolution and quality, which limits the methods for medical image sharing.
Costs: Burning individual CDs or DVDs for each patient comes with its burden of costs. The cost of purchasing blank CDs and DVDs, the cost of DICOM CD burner software, and the DICOM software price must be considered. If the CD is not immediately written and given to the patient in person, the cost of delivering the CD to the patient must also be taken into account.
Back-up of medical imagesWith a standalone PACS servers, most healthcare facilities need to invest in expensive back-up software and storage in order to mitigate the risk of data loss in case there is a system failure. With cloud-based storage, however, all existing medical images can be backed up and archived at nominal additional costs. Cloud-based PACS is the long-term solution for archiving medical images.

Finally, programs processing DICOM media files should continue to take precautions such as scanning the files with anti-virus software and not assuming they are safe. Import systems should disable file execution when reading CDs or DVDs.

FrameOfReferenceUID tag specifies a spatial reference. If two images have the same frame of reference UID value then it means that they are spatially aligned. By default, the value is empty, which means that a new frame of reference UID is created and so the exported image is not associated with any other image. If an image is spatially registered to another then it is advisable to copy the frame of reference UID value from the other image, because this may be required for fused display of the images in some image review software.

Today, another alternative to mailing a CD is downloading a software application onto your computer that allows you to send a study to your desired physician. However, this idea creates a few problems of its own.

This can be used to create hard copies of images or to print images for review by other healthcare professionals.Modality Worklist service:The Modality Worklist service sends information about upcoming procedures to DICOM devices. This can be used to ensure that the correct images are captured and that the procedure is performed correctly.Modality Performed Procedure Step service:The Modality Performed Procedure Step service sends information about completed procedures to DICOM devices. This can be used to review images from completed procedures and to verify that the procedure was performed correctly.By understanding the different types of DICOM services, healthcare professionals can better use medical imaging technology and provide better patient care.
