Around December 1995, Kelly began having troubles with the law again, this time around drug-related charges. [33] In April 1996, Kelly was released on $25,000 bail and in June 1996 was required to submit to a urine test. Kelly allegedly tested positive for the presence of codeine, a known narcotic ingredient used in cough syrup, Tylenol with codeine, and marijuana. [34] Kelly was arrested again in June 1996 for possession of less than 200 grams of a controlled substance and in August 1996 in Cook County, Illinois on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and paraphernalia. [35] Kelly's lawyer, Edward Gross, asserted that Kelly's arrest had nothing to do with the singer being denied the right to marry a 17-year-old. Despite the attempt at winning Kelly an acquittal, in September 1996 Kelly was found guilty of unlawful distribution of less than 2,000 units of cocaine. [36] Kelly was sentenced to four years in prison in September 1996. [37]
While serving his sentence, Kelly started to write songs and singing them. In August 1997, Kelly was released from prison. He was released with time served and was placed on three years' probation. Kelly spent the rest of the year touring, recording and promoting his first post-prison album, TP. TP was released in June 1998. [38]
In August 1998, Kelly released the second installment of his TP series, TP2. His 1998 summer release of TP2 was also the beginning of Kelly's decades-long friendship and collaboration with singer and producer Jermaine Dupri. [39] 3d9ccd7d82
